Old habits die hard. The loitering on Howard hasn't stopped yet. Driving down Howard last night (1/16/13) this writer saw a bunch of kids, five or six, standing at Howard and Paulina. Isn't it a little cold to be standing on a street corner at 9pm or later? There was a Chicago Cop SUV parked around the corner at Howard and Marshfield watching them. So no need to call the cops. They were there. Hopefully the cops dispersed them because the loitering on Howard needs to stop if we want it to be a safe and interesting street. This picture is a reprint from part four of the update on the Howard streetscape. Howard and Paulina and Howard and Marshfield are the worst chronic loitering spots on Howard. This is the critical time to stop the loitering. The city worked hard on the streetscape. Its a new street. Time to end this dangerous tradition.
Right you are, Phillip. We need strict enforcement of both of the City's Anti-Loitering Ordinances: Gang & Narcotics....zero tolerance especially East of the El.
ReplyDeleteViolent crime in this area is stubbornly high and we are, IMO, well past the point that pretending that everything is okay will solve the problem.
ReplyDeleteViolent crime in this part of RP remains stubbornly high. I won't bore you with the statistics, but the numbers for Howard and NOH are bad. 24th needs to shift resources to it's high crime beats (2422, 2413. By the way, there
ReplyDeletemight be a lot less to the recently announced CAPS revitalization than I'd really hoped.
There are no loitering signs all over that stretch of Howard. The currency exchange and the Sizzle fast food place are where the lion share of the loitering is happening.
ReplyDeleteHopefully these businesses are calling the police, because loitering there only leads to trouble.
Is there supposed to be metered parking on this stretch of Howard?
There isnt now and its seems to be still a quite chaotic area.
@MCL, yes you are right.
ReplyDeleteEast of the EL epecially the loitering can't be tolerated if Howard is to have a bright, less violent future.
I think that the meters were taken out because of the streetscape project and I assume that they will go back in when the project is totally complete. If this is the case, I wonder how much the city will have to reimburse LAZ for the time that the meters are out of service.
ReplyDeleteHaven't thought of it that way Jim A.It really was a bad deal for the city. we will have to live with for a very long time.
ReplyDeleteWill be nice to have the meters back in though. Because that area needs to be monitored and have some order.
